Keys and watches: choose the right service
Understand key cutting, watch battery and strap work, and the information needed before the studio confirms a suitable service.
Key and watch services involve very different components. For a watch, the strap, case, crystal, battery and movement should be distinguished. For a key, the blank, profile and any electronic features affect what can be supplied. Start with the specific item and the function that has stopped working.
The exploded quartz watch below explains one representative assembly. It does not imply that every watch uses a battery or that opening a case establishes water resistance. Mechanical watches, sealed cases and specialist mechanisms may need a different service or referral.
Materials you may encounter
- Metal watch cases and fittings
- Leather and other watch straps
- Compatible batteries
- Key blanks and associated fittings

Crystal & case
The crystal, bezel and housing protect the display and movement. Damage here is different from a battery or strap problem.
Dial & hands
The visible display sits above the movement. A stopped or irregular display is a symptom, not proof that the battery is the only cause.
Movement & battery
A quartz movement uses a battery, while other watch types work differently. Compatibility and access must be confirmed on the actual watch.
Strap, spring bars & back
The strap and its fixings hold the watch on the wrist; the case back closes the housing. Dimensions and condition influence replacement work.

Common concerns
- A watch that has stopped
- Worn or damaged strap attachments
- A key that needs a compatible copy
- Uncertain watch mechanism or access
Prepare a useful brief
- Bring the actual watch or original key for assessment.
- For a strap, show the attachment and note any desired material.
- Ask about availability and any water-resistance testing before relying on the watch in water.
A symptom is not a diagnosis
A stopped watch may need a battery, but another fault can produce the same symptom. A loose strap can involve a worn spring bar or damaged attachment. Identify the concern and let the studio check what the item needs before choosing a replacement.
Key compatibility, watch-part availability and specialist work are confirmed individually. Do not publish or send detailed images of a security key in a repair enquiry. Contact the studio directly about the appropriate way to assess the service.
Questions to bring to an assessment
Does every stopped watch need a battery?
No. Some watches are mechanical, and a quartz watch can stop for reasons other than a battery. The type of watch and its condition need checking.
Does battery replacement include a water-resistance guarantee?
Do not assume that it does. Ask separately about the case, seals and any suitable testing. A battery change alone should not be treated as proof of water resistance.
Can any key be copied?
No universal compatibility is claimed. The original profile, blank availability and any electronic or controlled features need assessment. Discuss the actual key directly with the studio.
