Upholstery stitching repair

Separate an open upholstery seam from a tear through the cover, and understand access and material condition before restitching.

An open seam can result from failed thread, weakened material at the seam allowance or stress elsewhere in the upholstery. Those causes need to be distinguished before resewing the visible join.

Show the full seat or panel as well as the affected seam. Furniture and vehicle interiors have different access and supporting structures. A stitching request does not automatically include work on foam, the frame, vehicle systems or neighbouring panels.

Signs to look for

  • Thread that has opened along a seam
  • A join pulling apart
  • Loose stitching at an edge or bolster

Check the surrounding material

The studio examines whether the covering can support the proposed work. A tear through the material may require a different approach from replacing thread.

Assess access to the join

The seam's position, lining, padding and fixings determine how it is reached. Discuss removal and transport before disassembling furniture or vehicle components.

Agree the repair brief

Support problems, replacement panels and colour work are identified separately. The final brief specifies the work the studio can undertake.

After the repair

Describe any movement or repeated stress at the seam. Avoid adding adhesive or stitching through unknown components before assessment.

Questions to bring to an assessment

Is a split seam the same as a tear?

No. A join opening along thread and a split through the covering can need different work. Show the edge of the damage clearly.

Can colour work be done at the same time?

It can be requested as a separate scope. The studio confirms material suitability, access and task order.

Should I remove the upholstery first?

Contact the studio before arranging removal. Access, transport and any specialist responsibilities need agreement.
