Basic, Premium or Deep Clean — Understanding the Difference

Not every item needs the most thorough clean available. Here’s how the tiers actually differ.

Cleaning sounds like one job, but the right level of work depends entirely on how dirty, how neglected, or how delicate an item actually is. Matching the tier to the item avoids both under-treating a genuinely soiled piece and over-treating one that just needs a quick refresh.

The three general tiers

  • Basic Clean — a thorough surface clean aimed at everyday dirt and light grime, for an item that’s otherwise in reasonable shape.
  • Premium Clean — everything in a basic clean, plus a conditioning finish, for leather that’s dirty and also looking a little dry or tired.
  • Deep Clean — an intensive clean and stain-removal pass for heavily soiled items, or ground-in dirt a basic clean won’t shift.

Two material-specific tiers

Suede and nubuck get a dedicated nap-safe clean rather than any of the above — see our full note on why that material needs a different method entirely. White and light-coloured trainers likewise get a specialist clean built for materials and construction methods where a general leather clean isn’t the right approach.

If you’re not sure which tier an item needs, that’s a completely normal question to bring to an assessment rather than guess at — the honest answer is often "less than you’d think," and sometimes "more."
